What's Up? UPDATE

posted by Esher, in October 2009

whats up photo by ohaka

After a longer silence we are happy to announce another new big enhancement here on Streetfiles: The all new What's Up List!

Registered Streetfiles Members now get a much better overview about what's going in their personal circle of friends. You will see all activties of other Streetfiles Members you call friend.

The What's Up List is very easy to use and if you are familiar with facebook you will find it even easier: Once logged in, click on My Home on the upper right corner (you can also click your icon). Below your latest uploads you will find a stream of events showing who did what. Recorded activities are: Comments, Bookmarks, Loves, Hates, Uploads and Friendships. You can browse back in time and change your settings: Define what kind of activities you are interested in and exclude/include friends. Of course this new feature is only fun, when you have friends. The more friends the more fun.

We hope you like this new social component. It's aim is to make Streetfiles more personal. Get together! Everything for free comes without a guarantee. Please report bugs and suggestions here:
Developing Corner: What's Up? Privacy.

P.S.

A big thank you to all you loyal Streetfiles visitors & members. We are very happy with you guys, it's still a whole lot of fun (only sometimes headache). Also it's still very tough times for us. We really have a hassle to get our bills paid here and hope to continue to develop and maintain the growing Streetfiles. It's beyond our dreams: This month (09-2009) we nearly made 10.000.000 Page Impressions, about 8.000 unique visitors a day. We need a sponsorship As Soon As Possible, luckely there is a ray of hope on the horizon. We have so many great ideas how to expand this plattform but right now not enough money and time to go on like we would like to. If we will not get a deal soon, we even will not be able to keep Streetfiles online.

UPDATE: Take a look at your What’s up? settings to take control of what you see and publish!

UPDATE 2:
Please read this blog entry. We have changed a few things.

I am not shure if i agree with these innovation. It means that everyone of my friends is always informed about all my activities, my comments, my bookmarks, my loves, etc. . I think it would be nice to have the choise, who may be informed about the things i do. This form of total transparency seems not very atractive to me. Maybe it could be possible to give all streetfiles-members the choise in the profile-settings. I think everybodys privacy should be respected and it could be a risk too, if a member got busted, nobody knows if cops check streetfiles-profiles in that case!

Same here..

@LANSER(LENS)one TJ:
you are right ... let's discuss that here or in the Developing Corner Group.
i think it's not that hard to build some basic restriction settings for the recorded activities.

Waldi says in October 2009:

Great Feature!
Can understand Lansers point of view. I think everybody has to think twice now, who should be a "friend".
Top!

sponsorship... you mentioned many times, seems nobody care... maybe you can make an auction - sell our pix )) ... i guess there is more members, who dont want to here : If we will not get a deal soon, we even will not be able to keep Streetfiles online.

I appreciate your work...this is just how I feel it.

Whats about donating money, is this possible?

Esher

Esher says in October 2009:

@streetfiller: we have to ask you sooner or later. not at the moment. sponsorship will be an ongoing topic. something really needs to happen!

@hausburger: i am missing a feature where i can post something directly in my stream. just a status message.

@everybody: privacy is a topic agree, need to hide it...

Hausburger

Hausburger says in October 2009:

@esher:
it already exist!
it's just not visible in the interface.

S.M.E says in October 2009:

for the same reasons Lanser and the others mentioned earlier, I don't like this new feature - and it will lead to a decreasing activity of myself on streetfiles, that's for sure.
sorry guys, I always appreciated your work and everything - but in my eyes, this is just a lil bit too much.

so many people here do illegal things....especially those people don't like the possiblity of being followed on every step they do. that's a natural reaction of graffiti writers.
I'm thinking about deleting all my friends now...honestly. this is not facebook and I can't imagine streetfiles wants to be like it.

in October 2009:

My first impression was like "wow, cool", but only after few hours, this feature seems to annoy me. I dont want streetfiles to become somekind of facebook- like social network. I mean, it is a site for writers, and it needs to be a secure place for us to show our work, and to see others' Now, this thing is pretty much controlling our actions, and i dont want anyone to look after me. Esher, I respect and aprecciate the team's hard work in developing the site, but I must agree with the rest of the people above, this is too much.

Esher

Esher says in October 2009:

wow. we didn't expected that. google, facebook, streetfiles: the forces of evel? Stasi2.0? we will implement a possibility to hide yourself from notifications. and we take to your feedback serious.

everybody: please read our privacy policy. we really take care of your data and we ask you all the time to be as careful as possible (every second blog entry). the internet in general is not a very anonymous.

Waldi

Waldi says in October 2009:

Maybe something like a "true" friends feature should be combined with the news idea.

abcdef says in October 2009:

2. what do you expect from such new features?

S.M.E

S.M.E says in October 2009:

hey esher.
me personally, I didn't want to 'attack' anything at all. as I said, I really appreciate your work. streetfiles by far is the most impressive and best programmed site for graff in the net.
I think, it's not about me or others fearing that police or any other official institution may chase our actions. if they want to, they can anyway - independently of this new feature. it's just that I don't want others around here to do so.
I can only speak for myself - I don't like it if every single one of my so called 'friends' can follow my steps.
many people here have set their profile to private, and accepting friends is the only way to get full access to profiles of people whose work we admire and love. accepting someone other as 'friend' doesn't mean I want them to be able of 'stalking' me. I know it sounds harsh...I just used this word for clearifying my thoughts. you never know exactly who's sitting behind certain profiles and I really love my privacy. I also never liked the fact that it's not possible to turn off the 'online now' thing.
that's it. it wasn't my intention to compare your features with stasi tactics or anything - I think you understood it anyway^^
all the best for your following features....keep on putting your 'heartblood' in this site - it's worth every drop of it!
CHEERS

Waldi

Waldi says in October 2009:

A friend just told me, what is not that good about the new feature is, that you can't see your friend new uploads because anybody is bookmarking anything every 10 minutes ;)
The idea is great, no question. but i think there's a little work to do.
nice evening

Hausburger

Hausburger says in October 2009:

@waldi:
it's up to you. you can take control of it in your settings (at bottom of the What's Up List)
just turn off all activities excluding Uploaded photos and you will see a clean list of your friend's new photos.

Seul

Seul says in October 2009:

In my opinion, such options are not potrzebne streetfiles and new options the of site will be more complicated but on the other hand I understand that these are forced to modernize the search for a sponsor.

MaltLikkaSippa

MaltLikkaSippa says in October 2009:

i would gladly donate a small amount of money every now and then to keep this site running. perhaps have a donation link for the time being until more solid sponsorship can be had. im sure it would help if everyone contributed a little cash flow from time to time.

@Esher - € - ask us soon, not late!

The things we do, we love, because of unlimited possibilities, as well as streetfiles.

Mr. B

Mr. B says in October 2009:

Do we really need this additional feature? In my opinion its a little bit to much. The community thing can be better followed up by groups instead.
For my personal usage of streetfiles, I use it to get inspired by new and old stuff which is uploaded. If I want to get in closer conatct with somebody in regards to a photo or planning a visit I write directly.
If I need to know whats up with my friends I browse their profils and quite often watch their bookmarks to see what the like or not.
I suggest to leave it up to the user if he wants to receive this info or if he wants to share is personal trackings with his friends. Otherwise it would be a pity seeing streetfiles users being contrained/controled by others...

Everything is said about the new feature! I like this open-mind attitude of the streetfiles admins, nice to see that you take care of your members and respect their wish of remaining anonymous in certain ways.

I hope the financial problem will be solved as soon as possible! Would be a shame if a project like this would fail only because there is no money.

I can only speak for myself; i would donate a certain amount of money from time to time. if 1/10 of the people using streetfiles would do it, it may can help...time will tell

Good luck to you!

What's Up List is cosy innovation i think, but maybe u will include activities in streetfiles member's groups to it? Anyway now u added What's Up List Settings so users who don't like it can disable this function. Have a nice day.
